Copying Images and Interviews

It is possible to copy Images and Interviews between the Projects. This way you can merge two different Projects. For example, two researchers may interview different people about the same Image and later merge the results into a single collection of Images and Interviews. To copy an Interview or Image, select one, then choose menu Edit | Copy. ImageInterviewer will remember only the last object that you copy.

If you are copying an Interview, select the Image where you will copy the Interview to. If you are copying an Image, select the Project where you will copy the Image to. Now select menu Edit | Paste.

The object that you copied will be added, and you can see it if you make sure the Project folder or the Image folder is expanded, accordingly.

Note that when you copy the Image, all its Interviews are copied as well. If you want to move the Image or Interview from one Project or Image to another, you can use Edit | Cut instead of Edit | Copy. ImageInterviewer will remember the object that you are about to move and will mark it grey.

Paste the Image or Interview, like when copying it. This creates an identical copy of the Image or Interview, like when copying it, but removes the object from its original location.

Changing location of the Project on disk

By default the projects are stored in your home directory in ImageInterviewer folder. If you want to manage your disk space more efficiently, you can specify alternative location for the Project. This can be done when creating the Project and cannot be changed later. To do that, start creating a Project, as explained in Create a Project section, but you need to specify the location of the Project, when the "Create New Project" dialog pops up. The actual view of the dialogue depends on your operating system.

Navigate through the disks of your computer to find the desired folder. You can type the name of a non-existing folder, and it will be created.

Now all the Images and Interviews added to this Project will be placed in that folder.

Backing up and exporting Projects for exchange

ImageInterviewer maintains all the Images and Interviews in a folder created for each individual Project. Therefore, if you know the location of that folder in your computer, you can back up the Project manually. However, ImageInterviewer lets you back them up without closing the application. As a result it creates a ZIP compressed file, containing all the Images and Interviews of the Project. It is possible to use this specially created ZIP compressed file to restore the Project, saved into it. To back up a Project, or export it for exchange with other researchers, select the Project first. Then select Project | Export Project menu.

This will cause a dialogue box to pop up, where you will need to specify where to store the ZIP compressed file in your computer, and how to call it. The dialogue may look differently on other operating systems. The picture below shows how it looks on Windows XP.

Navigate the computer to find a suitable place and name the ZIP file conveniently. Press OK to create a back up copy of your Project. Now you can store the Project in the ZIP compressed file onto your back up media, or send to your colleagues.

Restore Projects from back up and importing Projects

If you want to restore the Projects from your back up, or import all the Images and Interviews sent to you by other researchers, ImageInterviewer can help you identify the ZIP compressed file, which it will use to create a new Project with all the Images and Interviews in it. If you have already uncompressed the ZIP file, ImageInterviewer can import such Projects, too. This will be explained later in this section. To import the Images and Interviews from a ZIP compressed file, use Project | Import Project menu. A dialogue box will pop up. It may look differently on other operating systems. The picture below shows how it looks on a Windows XP operating system.

Navigate through your computer and select the ZIP compressed file and press OK. Now the dialogue will close, and ImageInterviewer will show a dialogue that prompts you where to store the Images and Interviews. You can accept the prompted values, or specify the location of your choice, like explained in Changing location of the Project on disk section.

When you click OK, a new Project will be created and filled with the Images and Interviews contained in the ZIP compressed file.

Importing an uncompressed Project

If you already uncompressed the ZIP file, you can still import all the Images and Interviews. To do that, use Project | Open menu. This will cause a dialogue box to pop up. The look of the dialogue depends on the operating system. The picture below shows how the dialogue will look on Windows XP.

Navigate through your computer and select the folder into which you have uncompressed the Project files. Click OK. Now the Project with all its Images and Interviews has been added to ImageInterviewer.
